Hamburg-born artist Tammy Langhinrichs explores questions of identity attribution in connection with cultural arrangements of meaning and memory. The social and personal connotations of clothing, which persistently convey concepts of body and gender, are made spatially tangible in the artist’s textile sculptures. In reclining, standing and leaning poses, the anthropomorphic figures encounter the viewer in a way that is just human enough to make them accessible. An essential component of the artistic exploration is textiles and fashion. Fashion, which always arises from people’s social roots, is a cultural expression and self-representation, it is inclusion and demarcation, it can be a symbol of uniformity or of standing out. Fashion is textiles in an identity-forming context: it connects, separates, defines and opens up.
