For 20 years, spleen*graz has been presenting an international, high-quality, cross-genre, diverse and extraordinary art and culture programme for children and young people every two years. Since its first edition, the theatre festival has also featured works by young artists at the heart of its programme. The next generation and the one after that (and many generations in between) are invited to try their hand and present themselves. They create utopias, explore contradictions, form groups (and group identities) and build light-hearted bridges between the generations. But of course, the big, established names in children’s and youth theatre are also featured. Theatre in particular can inspire with its immediacy. It should not be bland, it must offer excitement and surprises. It needs forms that take the audience seriously, challenge them intellectually, touch them emotionally and actively involve them. Theatre as a social, collective event where people of different generations, backgrounds and origins come into contact: artists and audience, young and old, indoors and outdoors. Known and unknown, big and small, sweet and sour, near and far – and everything in between. spleen*graz wants to encounter all of this, it wants to look, exchange ideas, talk, listen and take in as much as possible. It wants to break down not only the fourth wall, but also the third, second and first walls. In the best sense, the festival will be a ‘co-creation’, characterised by the democratic desire for everyone to participate.
