17 July 1936 was a fateful day for Spain. The Spanish Civil War began with the generals’ coup against the democratically elected government. Three months later, the International Brigades were formed; over the next two years, some 35,000 men and women from many countries joined their ranks, including 1,400 Austrians. The support given to the Spanish Republic between 1936 and 1939 by volunteers from all over the world played a central role in forging a European tradition that helped shape identity. Curated by Georg Pichler and Heimo Halbrainer, this exhibition aims to portray the fate of the Austrian volunteers who served in the International Brigades and in other capacities, and to trace their life journeys, which led them from the dictatorship of the Ständestaat to the war in Spain, into exile, to concentration camps or into the resistance, and finally back to a liberated Austria – provided they did not lose their lives beforehand.
