The work of the Austrian artist Michaela Moscouws, created since the early 1980s, is regarded as unaffected by contemporary trends and radically independent. A surprising and, from a conservation perspective, peculiar mix of elements also becomes apparent when considering the parts of her oeuvre held in the FOTOHOF>ARCHIV. The group of works ‘Aus der präparierten Dunkelkammer’ (2016), created during a working residency in Salzburg, was initially incorporated into the FOTOHOF>ARCHIV collection, but was later reclaimed by the artist for further processing. Together with other parts of her photographic work, it was transformed into so-called “Pizzen” (2019). On these disc-like surfaces, each 160 cm in diameter, Michaela Moscouw’s works from the past three to four decades encounter images from the publication “Wien und ein Blick in die Alpengaue” (1941). In the gluing, blending and superimposition of the images, a vast field of provocative-political, perhaps sarcastic, but certainly entirely ambiguous interpretations opens up. Within the paper dough of the pizza, pictorial upheavals take place, driven not by a desire for clear statements. Rather, their enormous energy seems to stem from a thoroughly total process of condensation, unleashed by the artist’s brutal manipulation of her images.
