Otto Waalkes, a native of East Frisia, is one of the best-known comedy greats in the German-speaking world. And this hasn’t just been the case for a short while. Generations have laughed at his wordplay and his musical parodies. His legendary films, his unforgettable television appearances, his songs and verses have become an integral part of pop culture. For decades, he has also been winning the hearts and making people laugh – young and old alike – with his ‘Ottifants’. As a painter, he has long been letting his cult figure stroll through art history. The Albertina and its collection have always fascinated OTTO, and now he has achieved his goal with an intervention in the museum’s Habsburg State Rooms: To mark the 250th anniversary of its founding, the museum has invited him to re-examine and comment on selected masterpieces from the graphic arts collection – naturally, not without a touch of humour. OTTO meets Albertina invites visitors to rediscover the great names of art history through OTTO’s eyes: parodic appropriation thus becomes the sincerest form of homage.
