This high-profile exhibition brings together unique, rarely seen objects from the MAK collection with jewellery masterpieces spanning the 120-year history of this long-established haute joaillerie house, which was founded in 1906 on Paris’s Place Vendôme. The project is the result of an intensive dialogue between Van Cleef & Arpels and the MAK, which has brought together their shared passion and enthusiasm for outstanding design and craftsmanship. As part of this collaboration, the MAK’s famous collection pieces – ranging from medieval textiles to the ingenious designs of the Wiener Werkstätte – enter into a dialogue with the Patrimonial Collection of Van Cleef & Arpels, which comprises more than 3,000 haute joaillerie and jewellery creations, as well as watches and precious objects. What above all connects the approximately 500 selected exhibits – more than 300 of which are from the Van Cleef & Arpels collection and over 200 from the MAK’s collection – is their exceptional craftsmanship, their visionary design and the materials used. The juxtapositions also reveal surprising parallels in terms of form, colour and motifs, which can often be traced back to similar sources of inspiration.
