Ulrike Lienbacher’s body of work, which comprises drawings, objects, photography and video, explores the regime of rules, standardisation and social constraints, as well as the need to escape them. A starting point for her new works is the colour system devised by Abraham Gottlob Werner and Patrick Syme, an early attempt at standardisation. “What interests me is the attempt at approximation, the approximate, the not quite precise, a productive vagueness that arises, or rather a personal leeway that remains – in an age of passwords and forms, which are relentless when it comes to the slightest errors – zero and one, either/or – often also as a questionable principle of public debate culture.”
