Beyond Silence pays tribute to Erna Rosenstein (1913–2004), a key figure in the Polish post-war avant-garde, with a comprehensive retrospective. Set against the backdrop of the Shoah and the historical upheavals in Poland, her works bear witness to the resilience of an artist who steadfastly held fast to her political convictions and artistic ideals. Over six decades, Rosenstein developed a multimedia visual universe that reveals the close intertwining of the present and memory, of collective and personal experience. The approximately 80 works brought together in the exhibition curated by Stephanie Auer – paintings, drawings and assemblages, as well as selected poems – tell of persecution and flight, of loss and grief, but at the same time of resilience, artistic independence and a persistent will to renewal.
