The eponymous line “No applause. No life. No pain.” comes from *The End* and, with dry humour, describes a very human longing: the desire for attention, recognition and a lasting mark on the world. At the same time, the exhibition curated by Eva Fischer asks what happens when we let go of this logic of always wanting more and always wanting to be seen. Amidst species extinction, image production and the promises of new technologies, it opens up a space where the focus is not on optimisation and control, but on the possibility of reimagining the future, technology and coexistence. ‘No applause. no life. no pain.’ unfolds a panorama of change: the extinction of species, the disappearance of shared cultural spaces and the transformation of our perception in the age of generative AI. In her films, installations and AI-based works, Claudia Larcher combines ecological issues with reflections on the future of cinema and image production.
