Over the course of decades, and sometimes centuries, museums accumulate veritable treasures that are not on permanent display. With *Hidden Stories: Treasures from the Collections*, the Weltmuseum Wien brings to the fore objects that have hitherto been rarely or never seen by the public. They tell of the people, societies and worlds of knowledge from which they originate, of ritual practices, craftsmanship and cultural exchange. At the same time, they offer new insights into the diversity of the Weltmuseum Wien’s holdings and their multi-layered historical and global interconnections. The exhibition brings together three curatorial approaches that explore the multifaceted nature of the collections from different perspectives. The focus is on hair ornaments, stone sculptures and contemporary art from Pakistan. Each presentation follows its own concept and emphasises different aspects. Together, they form a polyphonic dialogue between the past and the present. They illustrate that collections are not static holdings, but historical archives whose significance changes with every new piece of research and every new question raised.
