The Belvedere is dedicating an extensive solo exhibition to the artist Erika Giovanna Klien (1900–1957). The leading figure of Viennese Kinetism, she drew and painted fascinating depictions of birds in flight, dancing bodies and rotating machines. Her compositions are underpinned by the observation, analysis and arrangement of complex movements, whether of natural or technical origin. Particularly after her move to New York in 1929, Klien emerged as a keen observer of technological progress and the modern, ever-accelerating pace of life in the metropolis. The exhibition at the Lower Belvedere, curated by Verena Gamper, sheds light on all facets of the oeuvre of this painter, graphic artist and art educator with a passion for dance and theatre, and presents the latest research findings on her life and work.
