Ishír. Living Memories from Paraguay is the second exhibition in the Weltmuseum Wien’s new pop-up space, where temporary exhibitions are organised in collaboration with external partners. Historical photographs and the ethnographic collection of the Italian painter, photographer and ethnologist Guido Boggiani (1861–1902), held at the Weltmuseum Wien, form the centrepiece of a re-encounter with the Ishír of today. Boggiani undertook several journeys to the Gran Chaco, documenting the cultures with his camera and amassing an extensive ethnographic collection. The exhibition not only addresses the struggle of the Ishír and other indigenous groups to preserve their habitat, culture and language, but also makes art a central form of expression for resistance. Ethnographic objects such as feather jewellery, bags made from bromeliad fibres, hunting equipment and a masked costume enter into dialogue with contemporary drawings that depict ritual and the relationship with nature at the heart of the Ishír’s way of life.
