The Austrian photographer Eric Asamoah, who lives and works in Vienna and Paris, explores issues of identity, memory and representation in his portraits – shaped by transnational perspectives and lived experiences within the Ghanaian diaspora. His work is characterised by a restrained, contemplative approach. As curator Mona Schubert emphasises, “In Eric Asamoah, we are presenting a defining voice of the younger Austrian photography scene. His highly acclaimed photobooks and exhibitions are characterised by a poetic visual language that emerges from his encounters with his subjects and weaves personal stories together with collective experiences.” Asamoah’s latest project, *As Our Hearts Bow* (2026)—to which the photograph mentioned at the outset belongs—combines two strands: in the first part, he engages with images from private photo albums dating from the 1970s to the 1990s, most of which were taken by the women in his family. These images not only document the everyday realities and special occasions of an immigrant family, but also shed light on the transmission of the photographic gaze across generations. In the second part, Asamoah builds on this archival approach to create a conceptual series centred on the shoes of his grandmother Lucy.
