In the last week of August, the NEW LOCAL FILM festival once again transforms the charming medieval old town of Freistadt, Upper Austria, into a mini-hub of the (local) film world. Over the course of five festival days, around 50 international and national feature films, documentaries and short films – including numerous Austrian premieres – invite audiences to explore the ever-relevant theme of ‘home’ from different perspectives and to engage with it in depth. With its programme, the festival seeks each year not only to rethink the ‘Heimatfilm’ but also the multifaceted and politically contested concept of ‘home’, exploring and discussing it in all its facets. Over the years, identity and migration have emerged as key themes, but the screen in Freistadt also focuses on stories of often overlooked lives and structural change in rural areas. The film programme is complemented and rounded off by evening concerts with free admission at the Salzhof Cultural Centre, situated right next to the cinema.
