Christoph Luger, a painter born in Bregenz who currently lives in Vienna, is exhibiting works on paper at the Kubin-Haus; some are displayed as freestanding installations in the space, whilst others hang on the walls as paintings. Luger first made a name for himself with large-format abstract ink paintings; today, his work – which draws on the structures of medieval murals whilst remaining committed to non-representational painting – is increasingly defined by colour. Alongside distemper paints, paper is the defining element, which must first be prepared as a painting surface before it can serve as a medium for the image. As in the Asian tradition, the painter is also a paper artist. Alongside large-format works on paper, Luger is also exhibiting his ‘Winterreise’ cycle, a series of small ink works, for which EDITION LANDSTRICH is publishing a volume entitled ‘Eine Art Winterreise’; included is a text by Gerhard Zeillinger, which refers both to Luger’s works and to Wilhelm Müller’s song cycle set to music by Schubert.
