The Earth’s core lies some 6,000 km beneath us. The reality of this core and the question of what this subterranean space consists of have always provided fertile ground for speculation and test the limits of our visual, acoustic and existential imagination. UNDER-MINING delves into historical and contemporary developments concerning commons, appropriations, porous and manifest subsoils, and psychoacoustic landscapes. Past, hypothetical theories of subterranean strata and layers, and contemporary debates on the subject, are undermined and redefined. UNDER-MINING burrows through exposed soils and diverse conglomerates, oscillating between the visible and the audible, life and death, time and materiality.
