In her photographic installations, Valérie Jouve embarks on an anthropological journey through spaces in which people, architecture and nature are accorded equal significance as markers of identity. They enter into a dialogue that gives rise to specific narrative forms. For the exhibition curated by Walter Seidl, the artist devised a precise dramaturgy in which the photographs are presented in various dimensions, materialisations and arrangements. Whether rural life in specific regions of France, urban structures or life in Palestine – Jouve observes hybrid forms of community and their relationship with their surroundings. The focus on Palestine is also evident in a digital slide projection featuring the six cities of Bethlehem, Hebron, Jericho, Jerusalem, Nablus and Ramallah. The photographs, in turn, are arranged in such a way as to create visible contrasts, thereby highlighting the personalities of the subjects portrayed. The names of the individuals are given subtle paraphrases in the image captions. By combining landscape and portraiture, the artist creates visual worlds that transcend the concept of reportage and open up new perspectives and lines of sight.
