At the heart of Bernd Koller’s artistic practice lies the dialogue between humankind and nature. The title ‘Baumdenken’ (Tree Thinking) derives from a watercolour of the same name dating from 2003. A few years later – in 2012 – during a study visit to Jingdezhen, China, he produced his first ink drawings of tree fungi and ceramics. It took a long time – much like tree fungi growing from a mycelium – for these ideas to become visible. Drawings, prints and ceramic objects correspond with one another and form different layers of an idea that moves from the two-dimensional plane into space and back again.
