To mark the 80th anniversary of Arnold Rosé’s death and the 120th anniversary of Alma Rosé’s birth, Laura Balomiri is presenting two commemorative concerts featuring the renowned Korngold Ensemble and the star Austrian violinist Benjamin Schmid. The concerts form part of the current programme focusing on ‘Music in Exile’, marking the 70th anniversary of the Austrian Cultural Forum London. On 9 October, works by Erich Wolfgang Korngold and Ernest Chausson will be performed at the Austrian Embassy’s residence. Holocaust survivor Anita Lasker-Wallfisch, who played the cello in the Auschwitz Girls’ Orchestra under the direction of Alma Rosé, is expected to attend as a contemporary witness. On 10 October, a traditional Myra Hess Lunchtime Concert will take place at the National Gallery in memory of father and daughter Rosé. During the Second World War, Myra Hess’s concerts filled the National Gallery’s exhibition rooms – which had been emptied to provide shelter from air raids – with hope. Arnold and Alma Rosé, who had fled from Austria to London, performed there themselves as guest artists at the time.
