Eva Schlegel, who was born in Tyrol, has been exploring for some time how perception and immateriality shape our relationship with space. Her practice encompasses a wide range of artistic forms of expression, including sculptures, photographs, pictorial objects, videos and augmented reality projects. This diversity reflects a consistent examination of the question of how we not only see space, but also think about and feel it. Her works open up interstitial spaces and dissolve the seemingly fixed boundaries of space. A striking example of this is her mirror-based work, which allows us ‘to contemplate the past whilst also looking towards the future’. Here, space becomes a stage upon which the past and future intertwine. The loss of bearings in the face of far-reaching global crises is one of the defining experiences of the present day. The exhibition *Falling up*, curated by Katia Huemer, takes up this sense of disorientation and counters it with a different perspective. The paradoxical title – ‘falling upwards’ – challenges the laws of gravity and opens up the possibility of understanding the loss of orientation not solely as a threat, but also as a shift in perspective.
