The Austrian collectives Total Refusal and Theater im Bahnhof are developing an unusual avatar live in front of an audience at HAU Hebbel am Ufer: old, exhausted and without ambition. Inspired by Henry David Thoreau’s *Walden*, this retreat becomes an alternative to constant self-optimisation. Straddling the line between live performance and a video game, the production ‘Let’s Play I Am Old and Tired’ asks what happens when tiredness, listlessness and feeling overwhelmed are seen not as weaknesses, but as new superpowers. The video game thus becomes a refuge from the pressure to perform and the logic of capitalist exploitation.
