As one of the most important Abstract Expressionists, Robert Motherwell had a decisive influence on the art of the second half of the 20th century. The American artist’s gestural-expressive painting was guided by intuitive impulses and concepts of inwardness as well as by an engagement with political themes. With this exhibition, the Kunstforum Wien presents the work of an important representative of Abstract Expressionism, that monumental gestural painting that began in the 1940s and is regarded as the first original American art of the post-war period. This is the first retrospective of the work of the great American artist in Austria since 1976 and the first in Europe since 1998.
