To mark his 80th birthday, the Albertina is honouring Franz West (1947–2012) with a retrospective. The non-conformist artist, known for his rebellious nature, combined with stubbornness and humour, was featured on several occasions at Documenta and the Venice Biennale, and was awarded the Golden Lion in 2011. Influenced by Viennese Actionism, he created his legendary ‘Passstücke’ in the 1970s: by wearing, holding and placing them on the body, these prosthesis-like structures adapt to the body’s contours and give the audience the opportunity to interact. Objects become opportunities; art becomes a situation. West’s work breaks down boundaries, bridges art and life, and inspires generations of artists. A tribute to a man who took art off its pedestal and placed it right at the heart of life.
