Jamaican musician Lee “Scratch” Perry’s way of working was characterised by an immediate, spontaneous interplay of action and reaction. Perry was a pioneer of dub, reggae and ska and is regarded as the inventor of the remix and the mash-up. Last but not least, he made a significant contribution to shaping the self-image of Jamaican identity.
Constant change and transformation also characterised Perry’s long-standing collaboration with the artist Maria Rodski. This resulted in objects in a mix of different media and methods, such as totem-like wall works made from old CDs and art postcards, scribbled texts and poetry, old defective recording devices, figures of the Black Madonna and mythically charged stones. The filmmaker Volker Schaner has documented the experimental work of the two artists, making us witnesses to the creative process. Schaner also shows selected scenes from his video works with Lee Perry from 1999 to 2019.
