The United Nations General Assembly has declared 2024 the International Year of the Camelid. The Weltmuseum Wien is presenting the exhibition On the Back of Camels as part of Austria’s international commitment. Living together with camels and their relatives characterizes cultures. It forms the basis of life for people in many parts of the world and is part of their cultural identity. In 2024, the Weltmuseum Wien will be exploring the many facets of this coexistence with dromedaries, Bactrian camels, llamas and alpacas – in short: camelids – in a special exhibition. The thematic arc spans from the original camels of North America to their domestication and worldwide spread to the keeping of camelids as almost universal farm animals that still ensure human survival today. With films, photographs, historical and contemporary works of art as well as objects from the collections of the Weltmuseum Wien and numerous loans, the exhibition tells of past, present and future encounters with camelids.
