The Afro Arabic Waltz Archestra, consisting of 10 musicians under the direction of Harald Huber, long-time president of the Austrian Music Council and pianist, composer and arranger responsible for the ensemble’s colourful and diverse program, will perform at the renowned international festival of Dougga on July 4, 2025. This musical ensemble, which mixes the Viennese waltz with rhythms from Dakar, Tunis and Damascus, is inspired by Arabic, West African and Austrian musical traditions. Iraqi and Syrian chants, Maghrebian Gnawa rhythms, Austrian waltz traditions and free jazz passages are combined to create a new kind of mixture. The 200th anniversary of Johann Strauss’ birth will be celebrated in Austria in 2025 – the ensemble will combine the Viennese waltz tradition with Arabic and African rhythms in one part of the program, thus building a bridge to the 21st century. To mark the anniversary of “300 years of diplomatic relations between Austria and Tunisia”, this concert brings together a fusion of characteristic rhythms, melodies and instrumentation from both cultures and is an expression of cultural diversity and musical innovation. The festival, which takes place every year, is held at the archaeological site of Dougga, a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
