The generation of artists to which Heinrich J. Pölzl belonged had their first contact with art before the catastrophe of the war, the Nazi terror and the general suffering associated with it. The experience of total destruction made a new beginning necessary. Heinrich Pölzl was not only a painter, but also an eminent draughtsman who experimented in three-dimensional art as well as in film and photography. This exhibition, however, is primarily concerned with the artist’s painterly oeuvre. It is an overview of a highly independent artistic path that is full of highlights and astonishing results. Despite his active involvement in the local art scene, Pölzl remained a loner. Today, his artistic development stands monolithically in Styrian art history.
