This year’s edition of viennacontemporary, Austria’s leading contemporary art fair, is the first under the new artistic direction of Abaseh Mirvali; 102 exhibitors, including 97 galleries from 25 countries, will gather at the Marx Halle. The 2025 edition of viennacontemporary is divided into three significant curated sections: CONTEXT, ZONE1 and STATEMENT. While CONTEXT and ZONE1 operate within the commercial context of the fair, STATEMENT offers a curatorial platform to highlight voices and practices that would otherwise remain outside the main area. CONTEXT, curated by Samantha Ozer, features ten galleries with historical works by artists active in the late 20th century, providing an art-historical framework for the fair and a new perspective on these important works. ZONE1, curated by Aliaksei Barysionak, brings together ten solo presentations by emerging artists under the age of 40 who have a strong connection to Austria. This year’s edition takes a critical look at contemporary contradictions through a series of formal and political investigations – from feminist figuration and conceptual explorations of memory and power to reflections on displacement, technological obsolescence and material culture. STATEMENT focuses on one of the most pressing global issues: the pervasive effects of digital disinformation and algorithmic control. Curated by Marcella Beccaria, the exhibition brings together artists who work with time-based media such as sound, moving images and performance, whose works activate spaces of resistance, promote critical awareness and offer poetic responses to the synthetic and often manipulated realities that shape our world.
