Using a greatly reduced colour palette, Tobias Pils creates paintings and drawings that weave abstract and representational moments into associative visual worlds. What can be read on a motivic level as an examination of themes as elemental as they are personal, such as birth and death, becoming and passing away, also addresses central questions of painting: In Pils’ pictorial cosmos, one painterly mark leads to the next, one image to another, as if painting itself were constantly staging its own death and rebirth. The exhibition at mumok, curated by Manuela Ammer, is the most comprehensive presentation of Pils’ work to date. In addition to providing an overview of his paintings from the last decade, it also focuses on the artist’s extensive drawings. The exhibition also includes a wall painting designed specifically for the venue, which refers to both the transitory and spatial dimensions of Pils’ artistic practice.
