A hundred years ago, the communication of science and social and political contexts was revolutionised in Vienna. The founding of the Museum of Society and Economy by philosopher and economist Otto Neurath aimed to democratise knowledge and develop new methods of visual communication. Using pictograms and quantity diagrams, the ‘Vienna Method of Pictorial Statistics’ became a globally used visual language in the 1930s as ‘ISOTYPE’ (International System of Typographic Picture Education). In addition to Otto Neurath, the core team included graphic designer Marie Reidemeister and artist Gerd Arntz. The exhibition spans the origins in Red Vienna, the internationalisation of ISOTYPE, and its current significance for knowledge transfer, graphic design, and art.
