With the exhibition ‘Im Keller’ (In the Cellar), artist Rainer Rainer presents a selection of current works and pieces created in recent years that oscillate between raw materiality, intuitive composition and an uncompromising attitude. His painting is a deliberately untamed process. For Rainer Rainer, painting is not a decorative gesture, but an existential expression: “Painting should not degenerate into a hobby […]. Painting must be the most important of all activities for the painter himself.” His artistic process is characterised by experimentation and resistance: for him, the canvas becomes a counterpart that helps decide when a work is finished. He is not interested in pure colour theories or academic rules – rather, it is all about sensation. For him, red is the ‘most vibrant colour of all,’ black an often misunderstood resonance chamber. His paintings bear traces, injuries, cracks – evidence of a physical engagement with the material. Rainer Rainer’s painting moves between intuition and reflection, between figure and abstraction, between destruction and construction. His works show that art is a necessary resistance against indifference.
