With this exhibition, the MAK is dedicating the first comprehensive exhibition of Helmut Lang’s oeuvre to him. Based on the largest and only official public archive of his work, which has been part of the MAK collection since 2011, the show offers an in-depth and unique insight into Helmut Lang’s mindset and creative process. The focus is on his radical vision of design and identity between 1986 and 2005. Conceived as a mixed-media presentation with large-format, site-specific installations, the exhibition transcends the conventions of classic fashion exhibitions. It underscores Lang’s role as a pioneer who employed artistic strategies early on—long before he retired from the fashion world in 2005 to focus entirely on his artistic practice. The exhibition focuses on Helmut Lang’s vision of design and identity between 1986 and 2005 and highlights Lang’s role as a pioneer who employed artistic strategies long before he retired from the fashion industry in 2005 to concentrate on his artistic practice.
