Parallel to the 2025/26 annual exhibition, the Salzburger Kunstverein is presenting an exhibition by Isabell Rauchenbichler, winner of the 2024 sponsorship award from the Province of Salzburg and the Salzburger Kunstverein. Rauchenbichler’s inspiration comes from the beehive, a place where collective work, fragility and architecture intertwine. Wax, with its ability to both hold and yield, becomes her primary sculptural material. The objects she creates are thin-skinned; images, some opaque, some translucent, gather on their surfaces like painterly gestures. Taken as a whole, Rauchenbichler’s exhibition draws attention to surfaces as places where memories unfold. The works do not necessarily invite us to look behind these surfaces, but rather to observe how they collect traces. From here, the exhibition opens up to what Gaston Bachelard called the poetics of space, in which even the smallest corner or object can become ‘an invitation to daydream.’ Rauchenbichler’s surfaces offer precisely such invitations—subtle and open.
