Not as a call for attention, but as a quiet signal that something is about to begin, that the next gesture is already taking shape. It is uttered again and again, each time marking another turn – another fold, another additional weight, another surface that is called into question. This blow is not metaphorical. It is a drum: taut skin, vibrating metal, sticks that conduct pressure from one point to another. Now it becomes audible in the tension between the materials, in their tiny shifts, in the resonance that arises when they resist or yield. It does not announce an end, but a continuation; it sets the tempo at which the work is located.
