At every point in history, there have been innovations that have influenced and changed people’s lives and worldviews. One such innovation is the internet; it has radically changed the way people connect and organise themselves, enabling everything from global fan communities to political manipulation and worldwide movements such as the Arab Spring, climate strikes, Black Lives Matter and MeToo. Social media platforms now have an immense influence on public discourse, data and transparency. What does this mean for democracy? Our political systems are evolving much more slowly than today’s digital social fabric. Will our current democratic systems endure, or is it time to rethink democracy, social media, or both? The exhibition addresses the problems we currently face, from the loss of a sense of shared reality to power inequality and the erosion of democratic values.
