Davide Allieri’s environments and expansive installations convey the atmospheric end-time mood of an apocalyptic science fiction narrative. Reality and fiction, past and future, doom and new beginnings – everything moves between extremes. The artist addresses the points of rupture and moments of transformation between humans and technology. In his artistic appropriation of the narrative strategies of the genre, he conveys the existential fear typical of the genre, which becomes unbearable without hope. Hope lies in answering the eternal question of the visionary ‘afterwards’: How and where will we find ourselves when the end of the world threatens? Where does salvation lie, how do we get to a safe place – and what is the price? In Dornbirn, the industrial wasteland provides an ideal starting point for Allieri’s artistic universe. Here he realises his largest environment to date, which completely transforms the location and gives his newly created sculptures a site-specific context that allows the narrative to be experienced with all the senses.
