This year, the festival for art in digital contexts and public spaces in Linz has designated the Schlossberg as its venue: the historic hill, with its palace gardens, palace museum, rose garden, Keplerwiese, Schlossbergstollen and St Martin’s Church, will be transformed into a freely accessible art space covering around 5 hectares. In terms of content, FMR 26 focuses on four themes, which are explored both in the exhibition and in the supporting programme: Digital Afterlife and Immortality, AI Societies, Power Structures, and Resistance, Future Archaeology and Digital Artifacts, and Digital Deceleration, Isolation, and the New Idyll. The themes revolve around the tension between temporariness and permanence in the digital age – very much in keeping with the festival title, which alludes to the Greek word ‘ephḗmeros’ (‘living for only a day, transient, fleeting’).
On display are over 20 works from the fields of media art, digital art and internet art, including †een▲ge g☺d (US/FR), Selma Kjesen (SE), Lila Rui Lan (CN), Herr Clair (GER), YuFu (CN), Joerg Auzinger (AT), MAalex feat. Luigi Grande & Marta Perrone (IT), Abel Korinsky (GER), k0j0 (CN/US), Sara Koniarek & Matilda Bjärum (AT/SE), Aisling Phelan (IE), Ahmed Jamal, Emma Silvana Tripaldi & Till Schönwetter (EG/IT/GER), MIT KI (AT/DK) as well as numerous students from the University of Art and Design Linz (Department of Plastic Concepts / Ceramics, Department of Space & Design Strategies and the Sound and Space Class of the Tangible Music Lab). The festival will open with guided tours and an Opening Night featuring live and DJ sets from the field of experimental electronic music, curated by Rhizomaniacs (AT/IR/UA). Throughout the festival, there will be daily performances, guided tours with art educators, curators and artists, as well as lectures and discussions on the festival themes, featuring theorists such as Katarzyna Nowaczyk-Basińska (PL), Dan McQuillan (UK), Valentina Tanni (IT) and Danja Vasiliev (RU/GER). A Concert Night featuring Apex Anima & FRZNTE (IS/GER), Aja Ireland (UK) and DJ Terror (AT) on Thursday rounds off the programme.
