For centuries, the rose has been regarded as a symbol of love and seduction. Its colour, shape and scent appeal to the senses and draw us in. At the same time, it sets boundaries: its thorns protect it from being eaten and from thoughtless handling. It embodies a fundamental principle that extends far beyond the rose itself. Seduction is met with resistance. This, too, is a recurring motif in art: as an act of conscience, as doubt, as open defiance. Resistance can manifest itself quietly or loudly, individually or collectively, symbolically or concretely. Seduction and resistance, desire and boundary, closeness and distance are not merely cultural or political phenomena – they are deeply rooted in the mechanisms of life itself. Looking at plants thus opens up a new perspective: seduction no longer appears merely as a moral temptation, but as an elemental force of survival. Resistance, in turn, becomes a necessary condition for self-assertion. Together, the two form a balance that connects nature, art and society. For this international exhibition, featuring works by Fatma Abdulhadi, Mary-Audrey Ramirez (Artist in Residence) and Thomas Hitchcock, the artists convey their perspectives to the audience through a variety of expressive media: photography, drawing, print, sculpture …
