Franz Dampfhofer is one of Styria’s most renowned artists. Together with Helnwein and the late Manfred Deix, he helped shape the Viennese School of Fantastic Realism. The series ‘Transformation of a Landscape’, ‘Zigöllerkogel’ and ‘Father and Son’, which were created over a long period and recently completed, are records of a transformation. These works are conceived as drawings, tempera paintings, watercolours, photo collages and scriptural works on paper. Franz Dampfhofer masterfully presents works that engage with the western Styrian coalfield, the metamorphosis of a settlement and living space around the “Zigöller”, and the personal archaeology of his childhood. An exciting insight into a life’s work brimming with stories, visions and dreams, a glimpse into interwoven interior and exterior perspectives. The exhibition, curated by Klaus-Dieter Hartl, is complemented by small-format graphic works that enrich the cycles mentioned above. Large-format ink drawings partly revisit individual themes.
