With the advent of modernity, the question of the hierarchy of the arts – which had been raised with increasing frequency since the Italian Renaissance and which, amongst other things, had fuelled the rivalry between painting and sculpture – came to an end. This exhibition, in which the work of a sculptor meets that of a painter, is not an attempt to revive the ‘Paragone’ debate from an art-theoretical perspective, but rather a dialogue between two artistic personalities who, despite all their differences in terms of historical, spatial and cultural constructs, display surprising analogies in both formal-aesthetic and phenomenological terms. This juxtaposition of Herbert Boeckl (1894–1966) and Hans Josephsohn (1920–2012), who never met during their lifetimes, nevertheless highlights fundamental parallels in their conception of physicality, materiality and the process of form-finding.
