“Hindukush Notebook: The Forbidden Land” takes the reader into a world that is geographically and emotionally far removed. It takes its starting point from a research trip to the Hindu Kush in 2022 and an exploration of the secret poetry of the women living there, known as ‘dappa’.
Maps, paintings and wafer-thin porcelain plates – some warped by fire – bearing fragments of poetry, on display in the attic of the Künstlerhaus, tell of love, war, oppression and female self-determination. These porcelain plates, which are paper-thin, allude to the pages of the artist’s notebook; at the same time, they are reminiscent of shards, of fragments of painted pottery; some pieces have cracked and warped due to firing (1260°): They are dark, fragile documents that point to the fragmented, fragile existence of women; their materiality echoes the earthiness of Dappa’s poetry, which, in contrast to (male-dominated) classical Persian poetry, knows neither affectation nor transcendence, but instead places human existence – and the earth on which it lives – at the centre.
