Shara Hughes’s paintings take the viewer on a journey through the twists and turns, the jungle of an exuberant inner world. Hughes’s motifs are rich in symbolism. Whilst some works pay homage to Georgia O’Keeffe, the expressive use of colour owes much to Fauvist landscape painting and modernist Expressionism. Fields of flowers, fairy-tale forests and mysterious, vine-entwined waterfalls seem to have sprung from a wild feverish dream: gigantic blossoms climb towards the sky like trees; plants mutate into something familiar yet unknown; blazing sunsets are reflected in the water; stars glow on the horizon, bathing the landscape in a supernatural light.
