For decades now, Elisa Andessner has been exploring the body, space and social constructs in her artistic practice. Spanning performance, video, photography and drawing, she creates works in which the body serves simultaneously as a medium, a material and a site of both political and personal experience. The exhibition BODY COUNTS. Körperzählungen (curated by Sandra Kratochwill) brings together key groups of works from various creative phases and highlights the continuity of her artistic inquiries. The focus is on the body as a vessel of memory, resistance and self-empowerment. Minimalist gestures, repetition and precise compositions characterise Elisa Andessner’s works, as does her engagement with feminist perspectives. The exhibition is not intended as a traditional retrospective, but rather as a multi-layered journey through the central themes of a consistent and contemporary body of work. BODY COUNTS demonstrates that feminist practice is an ongoing process – physical, political and contemporary.
