In The Sun is Shining, the Radstadt-based sculptor Wilhelm Scheruebl explores the structures and processes of the natural world. His sculptural and installation work revolves around becoming and decay, order and chaos, and the constant transformation of matter. The starting point is light, whose alternation between light and dark symbolises the dynamism of life. Plants, in particular, become a symbol of the natural cycles of growth, blossoming, decay and renewal. Scheruebl places light at the forefront of his reflections; through the interplay of light and dark, it sets in motion the dynamics of becoming. What we understand by ‘nature’, says the philosopher and sociologist Georg Simmel in his *Philosophy of Landscape* (1913), is the ‘endless interconnection of things, the uninterrupted birth and destruction of forms, the surging unity of events’. Matter, every substance, is in a state of constant transformation. Nature’s cycles – from the changing of the seasons to the inevitable end of our physical existence – make this clear. The plant stands as a prime example of this change, this constant becoming. It represents the cycle – inscribed within the course of a year – from seedling through flowering to seed formation, until new soil is formed once more from the dead plant material.
