Much in our lives is uncertain – only one thing is certain: we will all die sooner or later. Yet we tend to push the thought of death aside – until it is suddenly upon us. Very close. Then the questions arise: What happens to the body? Who decides? How do we want to be laid to rest? What brings us comfort? ‘Death Positive’ is not just the title of an exhibition, but a movement: it brings death right into the heart of life and advocates an open, informed approach to dying, death and grief. After all, talking about dying has never killed anyone. Humour can help too: it creates some distance when things get too close, and makes it possible to talk about the inevitable. Curated by Claudia Kreslehner, the exhibition explores the body, rituals, law, religion, medicine and commerce, as well as farewells, grief and remembrance. From folding coffins to mushroom urns, from heart-shaped pins to bucket lists, from funeral receptions to vinyl burials, it demonstrates just how diverse our approach to death is. Artworks, installations, video interviews and objects from the collection and on loan explore the memento mori – the reminder of our own mortality. Linz, too, has its own stories and places of dying. The exhibition *Death Positive* invites visitors to reflect, empathise and pause for thought. For ultimately, it is not just about the dead, but about relationships, remembrance and life after loss.
