The exhibition gives people with Down’s syndrome the opportunity to tell their own stories. In a personal, humorous and diverse way, they offer insights – from their own perspective – into their everyday lives, their school and working environments, their friendships, hobbies and dreams. It is an invitation to discover new perspectives and to experience encounters on an equal footing. Through photographs, interviews and artistic works, the exhibition reveals what matters to people with Down’s syndrome, what is important to them, the social barriers they and their families face on a daily basis, and how they put their strengths, talents and creativity to good use. No clichés, no pity, no sugar-coating. People with Down’s syndrome do not need any of that – they need only what should be a matter of course for us all: space, support and the opportunity to live self-determined lives, together with their families and society as a whole. These personal stories are accompanied by key information and facts that provide insights into educational opportunities, leisure activities, the labour market and independent living. Some progress has been made, but much remains to be done. The exhibition was created in close collaboration with people with Down’s syndrome: from helping to design the graphics and providing feedback on content to organising joint workshops.
