New York artist Adam Pendleton articulates much of his work through the idea of Black Dada, an ever-evolving exploration of the relationship between blackness, abstraction, and the avant-garde. The paintings, drawings, films and sculptures in the exhibition blur the lines between legibility and abstraction, past and present, familiar and strange.

With Blackness, White, and Light, mumok is showing Pendleton’s first comprehensive solo exhibition in Europe and the largest presentation of new works by this artist ever. The works created almost exclusively for the exhibition form a visual chorus of collective difference.

Central to Pendleton’s work is a seamless movement between the different media – a fluidity that is ultimately due to an approach that understands art production as collage. These collages can take different forms, from large-scale paintings to film portraits of artists and theorists.
