tanz ist starts the new year in June with a Canada focus and shows a cross-section of Canada’s dance avant-garde – with a special look at the newcomers as well as those who have made history.

Canadian Clara Furey is an actress, composer, musician and choreographer. Her performance Dog Rising explores the circulation of physical matter and vibrations through our bodies and invites us on an extreme journey, a journey like a mesmerizing, haunting and pervasive spiral.

Face to Face is a powerful duet created by Chinese-born dancer Naishi Wang with Canadian roots. The conceptual choreography shows two people in the challenge of communicating with each other, between emotions and authentic expression.

An underground parking lot, an abandoned factory, a desecrated church, a crowded mall. Icône Pop by Mélanie Demers is a work in search of unusual places where religious and pop iconography, the sacred and the profane collide. Inspired by the religious postures of the Pietà and the bright colors of the voodoo goddess Erzulie, Icône Pop flirts with the subversive image of the Black Madonna.

switch (meditations on crying) is an expressive, intense dance performance between sound, dance and embodiment rituals, which will be shown in Europe for the first time. “My body is a place where emotions are dug and exposed, that is the basis of my work. Unspoken things live on in us, take their place. I am trying to unravel these dissonances”. (Be Heintzman Hope)
