It is a novelty at Bildraum Studio: this year, for the first time, a residency focussing on performing arts will be awarded annually from June to July to artists from the fields of dance, choreography and performance.
The programme kicks off with the multidisciplinary artist and performer Sarah Sternat. In her current works, Sternat attempts to give abstract, immaterial content – such as transience – a body. In Sternat’s multidisciplinary work, it becomes clear time and again that material is porous and transformable. Sarah Sternat defines the hole not only as a negative space, but also as a kind of pocket in which we can carry something with us, pick something up and protect it. The artist traces the seams at which presence and absence slide into one another. In doing so, she takes the system of emptiness apart like a body, examining it for its inner and outer state, whereby processes of dismantling and reassembling are repeatedly cancelled and restarted by Sarah Sternat.
