Every year in May, the ethnocineca brings together the beauty and diversity of documentary and ethnographic film art in Vienna. Over seven days, the ethnocineca shows cinema that discusses social realities and shows the diversity of human life. In addition, an extensive supporting programme gives the audience the opportunity to engage more deeply with the film content and imagery. A keynote speech, film talks, panel discussions, lectures and a masterclass will shed light on the programme focus HAUNTINGS and current documentary filmmaking from a variety of perspectives. The world in the cinema – a condensed space for dealing with the issues of our time. As part of the festival, awards endowed with prize money will be presented by an international jury in five competition categories for the best international feature-length and short film of the festival (IDA and ISA respectively), for the best Austrian film (ADA), for the best newcomer short film (ESSA) and – as a tribute to the roots of the ethnocineca – for the best ethnographic film (EVA).
ethnocineca – film workshop
This year’s ethnocineca film workshop once again offers an exciting opportunity for film enthusiasts in Vienna to realise their own project in a twelve-day workshop. International filmmakers and social scientists offer participants four days of creative and practical input through lectures and practical exercises. Around 20 of the 50 applications submitted will be selected to realise their film ideas.
